Getting to know you: Jonathan Freedman

What do you currently do?
I am a property specialist and managing director of Schönhaus Immobilien. Since 2006, I’ve acquired over 100 properties in the German capital, creating a portfolio of over 2,000 rental apartments, located in prime central Berlin districts.

As Managing Director of Schönhaus, I’ve built a team of highly trained, multilingual property managers who provide service standards unparalleled in Germany; along with developing an extensive network of the finest tradespeople, local agents and legal, accounting and technical teams across Berlin.

What is your inspiration in business?
I’m inspired to improve things. I like to quickly assess a situation, figure out how to improve it and then make those improvements. Whether it be a system or process, a building, a business relationship or a way of doing business – making improvements to what exists inspires me, keeps me awake at night and gets me out if bed in the morning.

Who do you admire?
I admire martial artists and fighters. These people are totally focused on pushing their limits every day in order to achieve what only very few people achieve. I admire their dedication and organisation. They go about their passion with a quiet determination and they live and breathe their goals. The best fighters are often the quietest and most humble people. I believe these attributes can be used very effectively in business and in life.

Looking back would you have done things differently?
No I am content with the decisions I have made and the actions I took to get me where I am now. All improvements can be made going forward. Looking back is futile.

What defines your way of doing business?
My way of doing business is straightforward, honest and quick – I believe in keeping things simple, keeping my word and not wasting time; all old school rules.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out?
Do not procrastinate. When you have an idea, put it out there, and act on it immediately. Give it your best shot and if it doesn’t work move on to the next one. No regrets. Live in the present and move forward. And always protect your reputation.
