Getting To Know You: Andrew Marten

What do you currently do?
I launched Ohso in 2011 with an aim to revolutionise the probiotic category, as I was looking for a product that tastes delicious while delivering probiotics for better gut health.

No day is ever the same for me, but at the moment I am currently focusing on our core range of products, as well as new product development and launching a children’s range later in the year.

What is your inspiration in the business?
My inspiration in business comes from always being one step ahead with regards to innovation. I am proud to say that our product has been clinically proven to be three times more effective at delivering good bacteria than functional probiotic yoghurt or milk drinks due to the brand’s patented microencapsulation process.

Who do you admire?
I have a lot of admiration for our brand ambassador and double gold Olympic athlete Laura Trott, who has demonstrated such determination to succeed as a world class competitor.

I also admire Amelia Earhart was the first great Aviatrix and the first woman to fly the Atlantic. She did this against all odds, she competed in a man’s world but that was not the point, rules, achievements and records were there to be broken and that was her focus.

Richard Branson has remained true and consistent to his ethos, with a remarkable “can do” attitude he has achieved so much and in his own unique style. With Virgin he has created one of the world’s greatest brands.

Looking back are there things you would have done differently?
Yes, but we don’t have the time to think about these and I hate looking back. It is all a learning curve and often you learn more from mistakes than from successes, therefore mistakes are an important part of being successful.

What defines your way of doing business?
Number one is to build a team that shares your vision and can share in your success. Secondly, the vision and focus must not change but the plan has to be adapted as the business grows. Finally, clear and simple communication with consistency of brand values.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out?
Action speaks louder than words. Many people have good ideas, that’s often the easy bit, it’s about testing those ideas to breaking point before making them a reality. Then going out and making it happen but be prepared to learn the hard way and to adapt as you progress. Take advice but remember that ultimately, it is your vision.
