Food waste fighting app Too Good To Go today announced that it has saved 1 million meals in the UK since its launch in 2016.

By saving 1 million meals, Too Good To Go Waste Warriors have prevented 2.5 million kg of CO2 emissions1, the same as that caused by burning over 2.5 million pounds of coal.  To put this into perspective, the CO2 avoided is equivalent to the amount of emissions from charging 300,000,000 smartphones or from driving around the earth’s circumference 245 times.

Research from Too Good To Go shows that over two thirds of Brits don’t realise that food waste contributes to climate change2. In fact, the total contribution of food waste-related emissions to global warming is almost equivalent to that of global road transport emissions3.

With 69% of Brits being unaware of the correlation between food waste and climate change, it’s hardly surprising that so much food is wasted. For Too Good To Go it’s not just about the number of meals saved, the company wants to inspire and empower everyone to think more about the food we waste and the impact this has on our planet.

Hayley Conick, UK MD, Too Good To Go said: “While we are thrilled to have hit this milestone, the 1 million meals saved so far is just the tip of the iceberg. Seven million tonnes of edible food is wasted in the UK every year and we are on a mission to change this.

“When we speak to food brands and outlets it is clear that one of the biggest challenges they face is finding a simple, sustainable and scalable solution for their surplus produce. By connecting them with hungry consumers on our app we are successfully reducing the volume of food that is thrown away. For our Waste Warriors it’s win win win – by doing one small thing they get delicious food at great prices and do their bit to help the planet.”

Too Good To Go partners include: YO!, Greene King, Chop’d, Konditor, PAUL, Lola’s Cupcakes, and Benugo.

Luisa Fernandez, Marketing Director, YO! Said: “YO! has been a partner of Too Good To Go since 2017 and together we have saved almost 100,000 meals from ending up in the bin. Fighting food waste is a vital initiative and we are proud to be playing an important role in ensuring that delicious produce is enjoyed by consumers rather than damaging our environment.”

Sarah Main, Too Good To Go user, said: “I love Too Good To Go! I downloaded the app about 6 months ago and have not looked back. Having a busy job means that I often need a quick simple meal and the ability to get tasty food at great prices, whilst also knowing that I am doing my bit to save the planet really is amazing.”
